trying a new platen material out.

I was in Lowe's today and was browsing through the tile department and ran across 2 inch wide marble.I think it's for door stoop trim.I got a piece about 36 inch long and cut a 8 inch piece and added it to a platen base.Ran it for a while tonight and it works awesome ,only time and use will tell how it holds up but for 7 bucks I'm in.IMAG0328.jpgIMAG0326.jpg

Sounds fine, I have used ceramic tile cut to size with great results.
I use double sided carpet tape to attach it.

Gee wiz guys, marble is a very soft material. I don't think it will wear well. A good smooth even tile as Lawrence has used can do a fine job. Frank

i second frank's thought, marble is very soft. a 4x4 or 4x2 ceramic tile with one side rounded works great for less than $1. hope the marble holds up. might try granite next time.

We will see how it does,if it doesn't last then it's back to glass or tile ,not a big deal to knock it off and replace it and it was a cheap experiment.Polished marble is harder then you think,my folks had a coffee table with a inch thick exposed black marble top for years.it's hard on your head and hard on your shins!

I'm running just a piece of carbon steel. I have flat ground hundreds of blades and other material on it and it is still the same surface I started with. I check it every month for wear.

I too just use mild steel.
I have flat ground a couple thousand blades on it, and have dressed it twice in all these years!

good for you Brian but that never worked to well for me nor did hardened steel for that matter. I use the pyro ceran glass and I still change it once or twice a year. If you do much contour sanding against a flat plate, that's the area that takes a beating. If you use a contact wheel that would of course certainly not show on your flat platen. Frank
