vibrating drillbits/spindle

I THINK my drill press vibrates in a way, not sure how, but i thing the drill bits end up rotatong AND vibrating in their places, which of course messes the drilling process

Any ideas?

Thanks

Update: actully spindle might be a wrong phrase, chuck perhaps? Im not sure

From what you are describing I'd say that the chuck is off center a little. I don't know if there is anything that you can do.

Put a square on your drill press table and see if the drill stays parallel to the square as you turn it by hand. (that's assuming that the table is square and level).

Square to the bit is most important. Off level does not impair straight holes, unless you are setting up some sort of guide that depends on level.

Shokr,
The "Run out" that Frank just mentioned is the reason I said not to just to use your small press as a mill. That doing that would put to much pressure on the spindle. Check the angle of the table also to make sure you are just drilling straight down. Also you may need to sharpen the drill bits?
A dull bit can cause chatter also.

I hear you there, Lawrence. We did a repetitive task of improvised milling using a cheaper drill press at a previous job using a slide table and by the time the week was out we were getting an extra sixteenth inch in size to our holes from the spindle being so worn.

Thanks

I didnt mill with it, but thing is it looks like its vibrating (when i turn it on and look at the tip of the bit/reamer), also the drill press entirely makes vibrating noise

I will check the table eitherway, but if it has an effect i think it might be seperate from the vibrating problem

SHOKR, my drill press does the same thing. My table also started loosening up and wiggles around. I have a Skil and have not been happy with it since I bought it a year ago.

I think after drilling a lot of steel with the cheaper ones, they get worn out fast. At least that is what I am blaming mine on.

Check your drive pulleys, they may be loose. Also, if your motor has a tension adjustment, make sure it's snugged up. My small DP vibrates itself loose sometimes.

Thanks Rudy, will check

Steven, i wouldnt really think i drilled that many holes with it. Will check the things suggested and see, hopefully a matter of adjustment or tightening!

Steven,
Those small Skil drill press were sold as reconditioned from the very start!
I ordered one a couple of years back and the thing had Run out right out of the box.
I sent it right back. Those cheap chinese made ones can be really junkie!

Go with the Harbor freight small ones if you are on a budget.

or the next one up, The 12 speed if you can afford it.

Thanks Laurence. I have been looking at those and also noticed that quite a few people seem to use them with good reviews.

You know, now that I think about it, mine was off right out of the box also. I can't wait to upgrade.

Good luck SHOKR and hope you find the issue soon.

Ahmad,

Total guesses here but here's my take-

As Frank said, Runout is the most likely cause IMHO.

Wear in the spindle bearings can cause this problem. If that's the case then it may be very cheap to replace the bearings yourself. Assuming of course you can get it apart and get the exact bearing needed.

If this problem has gotten worse over time this seems the most likely problem and solution.

Concentricity (is that a word ?) of the chuck would have always caused the vibration if there was a problem with that. Alot of folks will replace the factory chucks with an Enco keyless chuck but that's for the convenience of keyless and not necessarily to replace a "bad" chuck. My Ridgid floor model has some runout for this reason and has since it was brand new. I'll go for a replacement chuck eventually but it's not a priority for me at this time.

What Brand and Model # is your drill press ?

I dont know if you would consider it an upgrade, but I have a harbor frieght drill press. It cost less than $100 and works fine. I had some trouble with the pulleys loosening up at first, but after I figured that out and fixed it I have had no problems. I would recommend it for sure. The cost is right and it works real nice.
I'm looking at a mini mill for the future. I think it would be best addition as I try my hand at folders.

Does the chuck wobble back and forth if you try and move it by hand when turned off?
