walking stick carver

A customer approached me about a knife he could use to carve his walking sticks. He had a basic design in his head and here's what we came up with. It was a real challenge getting the curve to shave hairs but it finally gave in. It's Aldo's 1084 with micarta scales. The wine color handled knife is 5160 and the last one is my first damascus knife. I used a piece of Fred King random pattern for it. I had the priveledge of making the damascus with him, it was a pretty cool process. Thanks for looking. Danny

would you wount to tell us how you get a edge & sharpen the carver
Most knives I don't take the edge to sharp when it is in annealed condition. This one I did, and after the belt grinder hogged off a little metal, you can see the pile of paper on the floor from hand sanding (being annealed helped to sharpen by hand sanding) Once the blade was somewhat sharp I put it through two quinch cycles, which aloud me to keep the temps down so I wouldn't warp the already thin edge and overheat the very very thin tip (typically I only do one quinch) After a couple tempering cycles, the edge was hard and hand sanding didn't have much affect on the sharpness and I couldn't seem to get the right angle on the belt grinder soooooo, I krunked up the compressor, got out my 90 with some sanding pads and did my best to massage the edge into submission. Once I got the little wire to pop up on the edge, off to the buffer it went. I'm sure there are a thousand other and as many better ways to do it but with my limited knowledge and what little resources I have, this is how I worked it out. Hope this helped graveyard. Danny
