I'm looking at the 9" disk grinders over at Beaumont Metal Works and can't seem to decide whether the horizontal or vertical model would be best. Which do you experienced guys find to be the most versatile of the two?
 
I'm suggesting you look at Rod Neilson magnetic disc grinder in the 9" size. You just exchange the inexpensive discs to change the size of the grit rather than having to strip off the one size to use another. It's a terrific machine!!! Frank

If I was going to buy a 9" disc today. I would get one of the Neilson Magnetics. I wasted so much time screwing around changing the papers and cleaning the disc. Now to answer your first question. Vertical and set up so I can stand on both sides evenly when I reverse the disc.
 
Thanks guys. My primary use would be to make things flat such as scales, bolsters, and tangs. I should be able to get by with a dedicated 120 disk for that purpose, however, there do seem to be a few distinct advantages to the magnetic disk setup. Lot's to think about there.......
 
Interesting applications you are looking at since my thoughts were much the same. 120 grit is not a fine enough scale finish for me to use on my folders and I wanted something that would possibly be more useable. He does send these throughout North America. Frank

One of the things you should try with a 9" with a 3degree bevel is flattening out your FG & FFG blades. You may think they are flat off of the 2 x 72" until you clean then up and finish on a 9" disc.
