Wholesale pricing/retail markup

Wholesale pricing and retail markup.

I'm far from selling any knives at this point, but as a custom furniture maker that's how my mind works.

How does wholesale pricing and common retail markup work in the knife world?

For example in the furniture industry retailers will markup a product I make anywhere from one to two and a half times the wholesale price to arrive at their retail pricing.

Is that about the norm for knives as well?

I know people are always a bit iffy about talking about pricing, but any info you are willing to provide would be helpful.

From my experience, starting at the consignment galleries 25% is typical. For wholesale and retail it's at least that - I've been unable to work with some retailers I'd otherwise really like to because they want a 50% or higher rate. I'd bet your regular $79 CRKT or other "million of them" knives are at a 100% markup - the dealer gets the knife for $40 and doubles it.

Thank you Frank.

I didn't even think about consignment sales. I haven't done any for years. With a good gallery owner it went just fine. But there was always that shady one that I would refuse to work with on consignment.
