Well,I been wanting to make a knife for some time.
Another member of the board(Franklin)was gracious
enough to send me a blade blank ready for me to
start....
A set of scales ready to be cut,and fit.
it already had the plunge,etc. It was ready to go...
But am I?
We shall see.

Here is what i have done so far.

here is after i trimmed it best i could with my bandsaw.
the blade is dull because it has been on there for 20 years.

i realize i have a ways to go,but here is after i sanded one scale and am test fitting to tang.(is it tang?)
anyway,i am going to try make my own pins as well.
i also think i am going to put a liner between handles and tang to make it a bit thicker....any ideas on what to use?..something i may already have?

yeah,i think it needs a liner(spacer?)between tang and scales...i want
to be able to round the sides more.

any comments,suggestions would really be appreciated.
i hope i am going in right direction so far?

i want to thank Franklin for sending me this really nice piece of steel.

For liners they make some sort of insulation fiber paper that most people use, you could use anything with a uniform thickness that is flat. The plastic from laundry detergent bottles, the sides a pretty thin and colorful. Brass or aluminum from the hardware store. What about pins for the handle?

At this point I would mount the scales and shape the handle.

liberty,how would you reccommend mounting?
i have some nice pinkish red from a gain detergent bottle?
what all diffrent types glue can i use to attach?
what would i shape with?
oh,and any suggestions on pins?...i am hoping to have everything i
need to finish this knife....i have lots of brass,and aluminum from
my slotcar racing/building days....that's what i hope to make the
pins of.

this blade is BAD TO THE RAD....i just hope i can do it justice.

Now as far as spacers go just make sure that when to put them under the grip and apply some pressure it all lays flat and looks pretty good. Check your pin stock now and make sure you have what you need, if you don't most hobby, tractor supply, home depot, or lowes will have what you need for less then a 5 dollar bill.
You should be able to get the two part epoxy there as well, everyone has some sort they like better then the other and that's great but for a single knife i would suggest you get some clear epoxy.

Then its just a bunch of hand work to bring the shape of the handle right where it needs to be and then the testing ......that's the best part

what to use to glue it on?

jd you might want to finish up blade before you get into the handle if you want the hammond to show more becouse you will need to etch it
 
At a stop right now.
i am trying to decide if i want to use the handles i
got fdrom franklin as they are.
or if i want to put another set of something between
them and the tang to have a thicker handle?
i have cut a couple pieces of wood,but can't decide.
i am also trying to get back on my feet after a pretty
nasty fall in the ice a few days ago.
i plan to get back on it soon though.
when i do,i'll post my prgress here.

jd do you have a woodcrafters buy you they have a good selection of wood at cheaper prices that are thicker and dry kilned i got a piece of olive wood 3/8 thick 3 inch wide by 18 inch long for 12.00 dollars
