Working with Walrus Tusk ?

I have some outside ivory from a walrus tusk that I would like to slab and use as handle material. I have never worked with Walrus before, can you give me any pointers? What do I need to watch out for and avoid or what is the best way to cut and polish it.

I have never used walrus but as with other ivory or most horn and tooth i would say the most important thing would be to use a fresh belt and work slowly, dont let the stuff get hot. that was the best info i got when i was asking how to work with mammoth ivory and i would figure it would follow suit here .
