Hi guys

I find the odd drop in the spring (White tail) and was thinking of using them for handles. What is everyone using to seal and protect them?
 
When I used them I would just left them as they were. They were fine without any treatment, however, -- Frank

The ones I have used I did nothing to seal them with. I don't think any knife owner would abuse them as bad as the buck does and they hold up pretty well except when they fall off and then the other critters get to them.
They can make really nice handles if they are shaped right,the ones with no brow tines are the best.
 
Thanks fellas. I was thinking they would be alright but I have this paranoia about natural materials shrinking
 
I think you should let it dry for a good long time because it will shrink some especially if its a fresh drop.
I mean dry for maybe a couple of months at least.

I don't know if a moisture meter will work on it or not. It's nothing like wood,it's bone,just keep it inside for a few months and your good to go,just don't sell it to anyone in Arizona or someplace like that.:1:
 
I would let it dry for at least one year, inside your shop. I have used it sooner than that, and had some scrinkage leaving the tang, and or guard, proud of the antler.
