Introduction for Cliffrat, aka Joshua States

I cannot remember if I ever posted an intro here or not, so I'm doing it again in advance of posting in the for sale forum threads. Anyway, I live in New River, AZ and I belong to the following knife-making/metal working organizations: The American Bladesmith Society (ABS), The Artistic...

    Walrus Hunter

Jason, Try either a Mexican loop sheath or a lined wooden sheath/scabbard with frog. Either of those will accommodate the large guard and allow for a retaining strap that goes around the midpoint of the handle.

Finally ready to add a milling machine to the shop

I own a Sherline Model 5000A. (this is a bench top mini mill) I use it for a variety of things including slotting guards, shaping stock, surfacing folders and other stuff. It will handle up to about a 3/16" end mill easily, larger diameters are dicey. I use a fly cutter or dovetail cutter for...

Karl Andersen, JS ~ Turkish Twist Takedown w/ David Seward Sheath

Karl, this one is back at ya.... Karl Andersen makes one helluva knife! Beautiful job Karl, the sheath and Caleb's photos do it the justice it deserves. Just one question though. What exactly is "bot-blued"? :what!: (minor edit required in description)

Nice photo Caleb. Excellent arrangement. Nice choice of background. The color combo works very well. Exposure, lighting, everything.

    Hydraulic forging press advice

Franklin, I don't want to come off negative and condescending, so please don't take this post poorly. First, 15-30 knives a year is beyond the "hobby maker" in my book, and you should have a press that is designed to do what you want it to do. There are a lot of tools I will build myself in...

    Took the plung

I think Doug is correct about the face plate welded to the cast body, but I don't know why that would be cause to not grind it down. Unless the crown is so steep that making it flat would produce a very thin top plate. It looks like the divots in the face are more of a problem. I think (someone...

    Help with forged bowie/fighter mistake

Sounds like a fine opportunity to thin the whole thing down and make it a kitchen knife. It's a good size for general prep work or meat processing and uses what you have with very little design change.

    "Sibling Rivalry" Stiletto Dagger

I like it! Very art-Deco in style. That's a fine piece of work.

Looking at buying a 2×72 grinder finally.

If you go with the KMG, there's another item to add to the wish list: Travis Wuertz (Wuertz Machine Works) make a surface grinding attachment for the KMG. http://www.traviswuertz.com/?product=surface-grinding-attachment-for-kmg He also makes the coolest 2x72 belt grinder on the market, but the...

Looking at buying a 2×72 grinder finally.

My grandmother used to say: "Buy quality, buy once." In other words, I know you want to stay around a certain price point, but are you only ensuring that you will be upgrading again later? I am not familiar with any of the makes/models you mentioned and I just did a quick search on them. The...

    Texturing copper scales.

I've also used it on softer metals like copper, brass, and bronze. You just have to turn the speed down and use a very light pressure
