Evenheat off by 20* I was right

There will be temperature variations in your furnace, top to bottom, front to back and so on! Comparing thermocouplers would only work if they are side bye side ?? Best place is close to where your knives are at in the furnace. Clint

    Concerns about heat treat

Thank you all for the great advice, I was leaning to them thoughts right from the start and I have the customer stopping bye next week to discuss these issues. The customers friend, a knifemaker that made the steel has since passed away, this piece of steel means a lot to him. I am sure this...

    Concerns about heat treat

Hello, I am getting ready to heat treat a Damascus bowie that I am doing for a customer, he has supplied me with the piece of Damascus. It looks like a three bar composite and supposedly made from motorcycle chain and what looks like nickel running through it. Well I have the hollow grind...

    Recommendation on shop vac

I think the trick to saving any shop vac from the perils of fine dust is using the filter bags that are designed for drywall dust. I have used them for a few years and they work quite well and hardly have to clean the motor filter. Easier to empty, just pull out the bag and replace instead of...

Contact wheels - what sizes do you use

Yes, rubber wheels get harder with age. Not sure if this happens with urethane wheels or not? I am old school and like my rubber wheels from Bader, they have a steel hub that holds the bearings and are smooth and balanced. I tried to save money once by having my hubs re-tired at a "popular spot"...

Contact wheels - what sizes do you use

Hello, You should get a lot of responses here! I use a twelve inch smooth wheel, 70 durometer for most of my hunters. This allows me to get the grind up higher towards the backbone, less flats to deal with! 8" diameter would work fine for smaller narrow knives. I have various sizes to...

    G-10 liner trouble

Been having trouble with warping scales when I use G-10 liners ?? The G-10 is .030 thick glued on flat hand sanded Ironwood, I use g-flex epoxy clamped in vise overnight. This has happened to me more than once and would like to know if others are having this problem? I do not seem to have this...

CORBY BOLT, black, W/ torque head

Do a google search for 3/16" pivot barrels and see who has them in stock. If you have some 3/16 inch stainless rod, you could tap a 4-40 hole fairly easy through a short section. I will try and get a pic for you today, blizzard like conditions this morning! Clint

CORBY BOLT, black, W/ torque head

I use 1/8" and 3/16" diameter pivot barrels, usually get them 1/2" long and cut to length. This allows you to use a variety of black oxide screws. Clint

    ATS-34 supplier?

I had bought some from admiral steel about a year ago to give it a try again after having problems years ago too, The newer stuff seemed to be cleaned up again and I was happy with it. That's a bummer Admiral quit selling it ! You might check with Texas Knifemakers supply, I think they used to...

    Disc sander/grinder opinions needed

The choices out there for 9" disc sanders are slim and the ones you find are pricey. A variable machine is the Cadillac of course, but there is always alternatives for us poor folks! I built mine with a 1hp 1800 rpm AC motor with a reversing drum switch, a steel 9" disk and some steel to make...

    Disc sander/grinder opinions needed

Most of us makers prefer a 9" disc grinder, that way you can use 9"x 11" sanding sheets to make your disc and use spray adhesive to attach. Being able to reverse rotation is a big plus when working on knife flats. I have a shop fox twelve inch that I seldom use and it's a real pain to change...
