    Upgraded my grinder!

Hi all, I finally got my new grinder built. I went with a 21 inch wheel for hollow grinding and added a KMG tool arm on the opposite end. My reasoning was that if I was going to build a variable speed grinder and invest in the motor and controls I may as well stretch my money as far as I could...

    Tapmatic and forming tap question.

Sorry for the short reply earlier. I am at work and had something to do. I went for the threaded 1/2 mount because it was the most economical. I am going to be using mine on a mill but a variable speed drill press should work just fine and there should be no need for a dedicated machine.

    Tapmatic and forming tap question.

I am about to pull the trigger and get a tapmatic as they are %35 off at mscdirect.com. What type of forming tap should I get (HSS, coboalt, coating, and such)? I am wanting to stay in the 0-80 to 2-56 range. Thanks,

I'm teaching a Seminar on "Cut N Shoots" need ideas

Also a detailed sketch. You can use it like an outline for the presentation. You can give info and details on each area you wish to cover along with a tip or two on fit/finish or common problems you have had and what you do now to avoid them. To expand on the fit/finish thought, I am constantly...

I'm teaching a Seminar on "Cut N Shoots" need ideas

The handouts are a great idea! It also creates a platform for specific details and will help focus the time. You could put the generic plan on a message board or something for people to look at in case you ran out of copies :D

I'm teaching a Seminar on "Cut N Shoots" need ideas

Only an hour?! That is what makes it hard! Well there would be the legal side of things for the ATF. You wouldn't want to use too much time on it but just kind of spew some info real fast and move on. After that things will get hard. I suppose in 2 hours you could do an overview but in an hour...

Rockwell testing carbon steel vs stainless steel Question

The test blocks are what you use to set a standard and calibrate the machine to. The only way you could know if the blocks are off is if you had another set of blocks that were rated the same but gave different readings. I think where you are getting off track is that the formula for the heat...

    A quick teaser.

I had been waiting for a piece of steel for the grinder build and it finally came in:biggrin: 12in X 34in X .5 in. I did a quick mock up before I start hitting it with the welder this weekend and figured I would post it up.

    The Riddle of Steel

I have been pondering steel quite a bit and have been doing a lot of reading as well. Most discussions on the matter are about the same as everybody lining up and peeing into the wind then checking to see who is the wettest!:3: One steel perfect steel? Never going to happen IMHO. There will...

    CAD/Drawing software?

I am trying to design a folder and the graphing paper that I use for fixed knives is not cutting it anymore. I won't be having any CNC done but I do have a digital read out on my mill so the accuracy of measurement would be nice. Does anybody have any experience with any open-source/free...

    Contact wheel

Quick follow up question. Why the 70 duro vs others? What is the feel difference on say a 70 vs 90 in the real world?

    Large diameter grinding wheel build.

You do have to use a 2 X 132 belt. Most of the variable speed controllers have an option for a forward/stop/reverse switch which will allow you to install a KMG style tool arm on the other end for a very versatile grinder. It does start to get a little on the long side at 40 inches. Bruce's...

    Large diameter grinding wheel build.

And they are done! All in all things worked out pretty good. The price was $95 per wheel. The spec's were 1 inch wide and 21 inches in diameter so all things considered finding a good used wheel and having it coated is a big money saver. The cost for a new wheel of that size is $500. The main...

    Large diameter grinding wheel build.

Bruce, Do you happen to know what kind of band saw they came off of? It would be nice to know the SFM that the wheels were running at.

    Large diameter grinding wheel build.

Something to consider when going big is that the circumference of a 20 inch diameter wheel is 62 inches. I put the 72 inch belt around it for fun and there is no way to run them. The next size up with any kind of selection is 2X132. You can still get up to an A6 grit but you don't have near the...

how to fix bevels and plunge line ?

Scribing lines will help a lot. One down the center for tip alignment and then one more on each side of center for another guide line to help watch how the taper in is progressing.
