    Drill bit type?

I have had the same issue with ruining bits, but I am using them for other than knives. I think I have contributing to this by drilling mild steel after forging and quenching. I try now to let pieces air cool before drilling if it is needed after forging. I just told Santa I want these...

First knife and sheath set finished and put to work

I haven't been on here in a while, been back to forging / smithing instead of blade work for a while. I forged a few knives that have made their way to a collection of 2nd's and have only finished 2 to put to use. 1 a kitchen cleaver/chopper and the 2nd a little skinning knife. I actually made...

Basket Weave Damascus in a Canister

Awesome thread. I'm a newb, but this is the first applications I have seen with canister welding and a press, or accordion cutting for that matter. Beautiful pattern.

    frustration in forge welding!

I haven't even got a real good handle on forge welding A36 yet when attempting it for other smithing projects, so I want be any help, but am hoping to see some good info on this thread. As with many things, youtube can be of some help, if you pick and choose the source : ) . I found the videos...

    Knifemaking abrasive costs

Frank - I have to commend you for putting this information out there. You have shared more than I would have dared to ask already. I did get a little lost though. I first thought you were talking about a sub 2 hr knife (excluding HT time), but actually you are in the 10 - 12 hr range for a small...

    First Knife. Please Critique!

For a first knife I think it looks great. I like the design and size for an EDC.

    Knifemaking abrasive costs

Well, I tried to stay out, but since ya'll insist... Firstly, you obviously have a very efficient process. Do you use multiple sanders, or switch belts out on a single machine? Work/grind in batches or take individual knives through completion? Have you tried to minimized the number of...

Tong Styles - What does or Could work best for forging knives?

Since my smithing interests have now incorporated knife making, I've realized its time to make myself some more tongs. I currently use flat Jaw, bolt and a smaller set of box jaw tongs. I was planning to do a set or two of larger sized box jaw tongs, but am now thinking the blade style or...

    Knifemaking abrasive costs

I think this is an awesome thread and great insight for a newb into the inner workings of a fulltime knife makers world, well at least as it relates to the topic at hand. Of course I work in a production plant and am involved in data analysis and capability and efficiency projects, so perhaps...

Nicely matched pair. I've never worn a cross draw but can see where I might like it.

    Copper Mokume and Buffolo horn

I really like this little jewel. The mokume bolsters are something I have been considering. I have wanted to try my hand at mokume and thought this would be a good excuse (of course I have never done bolsters either LOL). Did you make the mokume?

Handle design for comfortable fit and balance

Some good general guidelines in the above posts - Thanks! Laurence - I think it really interesting that you do measure the customers hand to fit the handle to them. Maybe I am just overthinking this. I definitely feel form should follow function and the knife should be comfortable in the...

Handle design for comfortable fit and balance

I want to make my own knife and handle designs, not just copy and existing patterns and am trying to figure out the best approach to do so. I sketched out a knife Friday, and attempted to forge one Saturday. I may post some WIP pics of the process, but what I discovered was that the handle just...

    From Round Stock to Knife

I thought the flat (face) of the hammer would work better for you. I bet you could make use of this for some of your other smithing projects also. Don't limit it to just blades. I'm thinking punches, etc.
