    AEB-l question

Ken is right, the reflection above the surface will fool the IR reader. Just like a mirror, it will reflect part of the infrared rays it get from the surroundings. Dull, unreflective surfaces lend best itselves to the IR measuring.

Matching angles bolster and odd shaped scales

It is satisfying when a solution pops up, isn't it? Thanks for the useful tip!!!

    Cryo?

Thanks guys. The storage issue is worth taking note! I have to find a dealer in my area, but i'm sure that relying on a longer shelf life is a no brainer regarding the choice of the cooling medium (maybe the price gap also?). So maybe LN could be overkill for 14c28n and probably is, but ramping...

    Tru-oil and desert ironwood

I would suggest to have a read here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1171667-Testing-for-J-S-or-M-S-Any-questions MS Rader is the god of wood finishing...Mastersmith experience backed up by former gunstock maker background; in that thread he's giving advices about finishing...

    Cryo?

While sub zero treatments of high alloyed steels are obviously required for the above explained reasons, i am still confused about the tempertaures actually required to complete the transformation. Is liquid nitrogen necessary to complete the martensite transformation for certain alloy or the...

    Cryo?

Be aware that 1475 °F is not a "0.8%C temperature" valid for all steels. In presence of hungry alloy elements (:3:) you have to snatch the carbon from their carbide hands with high temperatures, they won't let go 0.8%C into solution at 1475 °F. With the prescribed austemps for AEB-L you get...

Making a slipjoint in 100 pictures or less.

You are getting better and better!!! Very nice work and a big thank you for showing your process steps :) I had promising results dressing 45° the dremel grinding disk (a little thicker than the cutoffs), the new kind with the quick attach system. They withstand the acute angle during cutting...

HT oven & oil recommendations needed

Good point Scott, i do, and i'm not too confortable even if i provide an open window and an open door. With this in mind during the waiting time i'm out of the door, and when i finish i leave the shop opened to refresh the air. Definitely a thing not to be understimated.

    Tabletop Hydraulic Press

Very nice work David, did you try it with some hot steel? i'm wondering if you encountered the binding issue i had envisioned. My poor guy press (air over hydraulic cyinder) needed tweeking in the ram guides and that solved the issue i had when pressing off center. It was necessary adding more...

    Stainless Steel Folders

I can confirm what Ken said...i'm a carbon steel guy (not relative to Superman, at least that i know), but i was actually impressed when i made my first stainless knife in 14c28n. I only use whetstones to sharpen. Also AEB-L is a very good stainless steel developed to "simulate" the carbon...

HT oven & oil recommendations needed

Timgunn, your setup is pretty nice, why do you think it wouldn't be suitable for stainless? Actually mine is quite similar except i have 2 ports for the venturi burners, and i use 2 for forging and ht stainless, and one for ht carbon, simply removing one of the burners and plugging a tuft of...

    Tabletop Hydraulic Press

I think the only thing that could fly is the pin that connect the cylinder to the moving die. Everything else is annealed and would just slowly stretch and tear up if underbuilt. And this press looks somewhat underbuilt, but the main issue i see is the ram guides, they don't look like enough to...

Incomplete solder joint, slipjoint bolster technical request

I must get me a soldering brush!!! are they plastic? up today i used a variety of items from toothpicks to curled pieces of paper tissue. I use liquid flux, and if i'm not quick the paper tissue starts becoming jelly. I'm very proud starting to get a grasp of the soldering technique eh eh :) And...

Incomplete solder joint, slipjoint bolster technical request

Yes, since the bolster-liner assembly was completely profiled i didn't have room for any misalignment in case i had to take it apart for resoldering, since my worry about it. Very happy that the surgical went well and the patient woke up in one piece, without ugly scars ;)
