    My "Knife" Vise

Acme thread is usually much faster than SAE, but the main thing is is is far less apt to gall, or bind form a little grit or gunk. An old C clamp would be a good source for a ready to go piece for this. Nice clamp Ed. WAY simpler then how I made mine and I like that you can open it way up. Thanks

    Ceramic Kiln Mods?

I used one for a while before I made my oven. It was a bit slow because of the size of the chamber, but it worked. When I built my oven I used many of the kiln bricks in the oven. Like others I cut a hole in the top and hung my blades from a wire. It didn't have a thermocouple or controller just...

    Hardness Testing

I just went through a little deal on some small pieces. I have a small Ames portable tester. I had a small folder blade that didn't get hard enough. I had never had a problem before doing full sized blades. So, I set some small pieces close to the door of my oven. I did a piece of 1095/15N20...

New shop is finally ready to use

BTW here are some of my buddies that come around for handouts. I go out with a cup of coffee in the morning and put out some calf feed and set and watch them and talk to them. This is about 10 ft from the patio. Some let me come with in a few feet as I putter around the yard.

New shop is finally ready to use

Thanks you guys. The shop has a small apartment attached, thats where I have the comfort and TV. I am staying in it till I tear down the old house and rebuilt. Good jobs in Montana are a rare thing. There is a fair sized steel manufacturing plant here and a few other things. There is some...

    Tracy's Norton Norax Disk YES!

I just came in from the shop after trying out some of these that I just got from Tracy and I have to say I will not be sticking anything else on my 9" disk. What a upgrade. Love them. I have a thin piece of rubber gasket material glued to the disk also. Now when can I start getting them for my 12"

    A newbie's dilemma.

Good idea, a 2x72 without the motor would weigh less than a craftsman. You could also look at a handcart. Does the stone table have a ledge. If so you could clamp it with C clamps. If not maybe put rubber on the bottom.

    WARNING Berilium Brass

WARNING Berilium Brass I was recently given a 12# "brass" hammer head. It was very yellowish and had some chips from the face. The guy who gave it to me had good intentions when he said I could clean it up and use or cut up for guards. I have worked in the oil industry much of my life and have...

    Mill / Drill ?

I have the round column Grizzly mill and am a happy camper. I do wish it had a dovetail column, but, I don't have to move it that often. I did get the powerfeed and have added some digital scales. It does everything I have have wanted so far.

    "W"s from Walla Walla

Bruce thanks again for the time energy to photo and post this stuff. It is going to be a big help on my projects. Just the point about leaving the tang shoulders round will save me a lot of troubles. I broke the tip off a D2 blade just yesterday driving a guard on a blank I made before I read...

    Another D2 Question

I don't know about the cobalt. My D2 has none and I am a big fan. I think it would work like the vanadium and tungsten in forming carbides. I harden mine with a 30 min soak at 1850f and plate quench. Then 4 hours in acetone/dry ice, then 2-2 hour tempers at 425f and come out between 61 and 62...

    Homemade etcher voltage ?

I have made 2 etchers. One uses a 12 & 24 volt transformer, the other a Variac. 12 volts works fine. If I run higher than that it burns up the stencils way way faster.

    Ironwood damascus

Project manager from a job I was on saw some of my knives and drew up an outline he wanted. This matches his profile. Jim The vine filework goes down the blade and all the way around the handle. Filled with JB Weld mixed with saw cuttings from the aluminum/bronze guard and pommel. When I...

    Build a Gas Forge

I advice that before anyone cuts open or drills a propane bottle they remove the valve, stand it up and stick a small hose in it and run water in it for a while to flush it out. You might get away with it most of the time but, the time you don't would really suck.

Quench Wars! -- Side-by-side quench test

Good point on using the brine for a comparison point. I don't believe that the Parks is going to give up much to the brine. I would suggest that you use pieces around 1/16 thick. The reason is that as knife makers we are most concerned about what is happening at or near the edge and the thinner...
