    440c versus ats 34

That's pretty much the same thing I've observed and read about the comparison. I've used them both quite a bit but one thing I learned from talking to some people '"in the know" is that ATS 34/154CM is tougher at higher hardness's, I've heard that 440C is more prone to edge chipping due to the...

    Plate quenching

If I follow him right, he does it like I do, he has 3 in the oven and pulls them out and quenches them one at a time.

    Plate quenching

If we're thinking of the same thing then I think it might affect them. the vice you show in the link should work fine for one blade at a time I think but if you were talking about a post vice where the jaw comes in at an angel but then meets flush when all the way close there could be some...

    A few neck knives available

I've been working in the shop in the evenings instead sitting in front of the computer or TV, I'll be tring to do this from now on to try to have some knives always available. 1) First up, a Titanium mini. Made from 3/32 6AL4V ti, 4.6" overall, 2" chisel ground blade, kydex sheath with ball...

steel ? Can someone help me out?

Thats actually how I got started making knives. You can work them hard but if it really is L6 it's a bugger to grind and you'll want to make sure you don't overheat it. I'm pretty sure carbide drill bits will do the job drilling them.

steel ? Can someone help me out?

Probably L6, try to drill one. On the newer power hacksaw blades the edge is hard but the back is softer, if you can't drill it with a good drill bit you probably have L6. Well now I took a better look at your pictures and I'm not sure now because it says molybdenum.

    Carpenter CTS-BD1

I have to wait until tomorrow, he's out of the office until the 5th. I got the info for the 204P of the site (this is some weird stuff to HT) so I can't understand why the BD1 isn't on there.

    Harbor Freight Portaband

You know, I've got to agree with Steven on this one, even though I toss my covers when I get a new saw, it's not very safe. I've had a couple blades brake and it could have easily gone bad. Also without the cover there are a couple new areas where you can cut yourself or get loose clothing...

For you guys worried about how to mount it, putting the handle in a vise works better than you might think.

    Harbor Freight Portaband

That's a lot nicer than how I do mine. The 1st thing I do when I get one is take the cover off and toss it, then I just clamp it in a vise and I'm ready to go. I abuse mine pretty bad, that's why they don't last very long, I treat them as disposable. Parts are sometimes available and I have done...

    Harbor Freight Portaband

I've been using the HF portabands for 5 years now but I'm on my 3rd one. I will continue to buy them though, they do the job and when I wear one out I just buy another one.
