My micarta changed color to tan when I sanded it.

my first though is your getting it too hot and burning it. how are you sanding, by hand or under power? if its by power, fresh clean belts and not too fine work good. I slow my belts down to help with the heat issue. all micartas will look powdery when you sand them at first. then as you get to...

Greetings to all from SW OREGON

two pins are a must in my opinion for a work knife. get the holes drilled first in the right place in the blade and then see how the rest goes. sometimes you have to set aside a piece of wood for a different project in order to use the right one for what your working on. Erik

    Jack Folder

Yea Ken I do have a cnc but its for none metal cutting. I just wanted to hone my hand skills with the file for this project. Now that I have a O1 hardened pattern I can cut a bolster pretty quick. I have looked into outfitting a small knee mill with cnc and that may be in my future if I can get...

    Jack Folder

got a little Free time in the shop today and played with a new folder pattern. I haven't had a chance to make a Jack Folder and I thought I'd try one with a contoured bolster. It was a bit of a learning curve but after getting a pattern for the bolster in O1 it was pretty easy. i found a rotary...

If your going to drill the hardened steel you have two ways to go I think. First is you can get some solid carbide drills. Not the mass nary ones but jobber bits. They will go right through the stock. Be carful they are realy brittle. Second is you could soften the handle portion of the black...

Greetings to all from SW OREGON

My my opinion is you sould put the saw blade away for a while and work with a known steel that we can help you out with and give you the best shoot possible getting a knife from. If you buy something like a 1075 or a 1080 the price is cheap and you can get a good first blade out of it. After...

Dave a pic is worth a thousand words... in this case 2500. how about you let us see it? I hate it when i see someone getting rid of a knife because they "have" to and not because they want too, but i understand it. Erik

    Easy way to identify stainless?

    Take a magnet to it. If it sticks it's a 400, if it doesn't it's a 300 as a rule erik

    How I make pocket clips.

Great idea Calvin. Something so simple can really help the day along with less stress. Calvin, you didn't say if you hardened them? Steve, looking at your knives, you could easily make a gig like this. It would just take a. Up of coffee and a little time to lay out the pieces. Drill some holes...

    Optimum thickness for a folder????

I think the thickness will depend on what you intend the knife to be used for. I happen to like slip joints and I use .093 (3/32) for them. I may try some .0625 in the future to lighten them up a bit. Erik

    Looking for liner material

I guess I'm simple minded, but why not use 1080 if you want it to match? You'd have to machine and surface grind it down to liner thickness but that would be simple enough. I'd have to think about it but you might want to harden and then spring templet the liners but I realy don't think it would...

    Knife handle checkering WIP

looks good Jason. I have had a set of checkering cutters for a while and haven't had a chance to use them. maybe this will nudge me along...Ha. Is there a reason you didn't go ahead and finish the handle out all glued to the blade before you started checkering? I'd have thought you wouldn't...
