    Work on someone else's knife...

Eric, As many have there is no right or wrong answer to this question. You haven't upset anyone. In fact, that you even raised the issue says a lot about your character, in a good way. Jay

The new photobucket is a pain! What else works?

Calvin, Does this method upload thumbnails or full images? My posts use the thumbnails and I'd rather use full images, but haven't figured that out yet. Jay

    More photobucket problems

I hope you get an answer to this question. My posts use thumbnails, and frankly people viewing the threads seem to like full images better, at least I know I do. And, most of the time the majority of people viewing Knife Dogs are not members. I don't think they can open the thumbnails. Maybe I'm...

    Finished a few this weekend

Jason, They look good to me. Nice clean designs and the grinder heights are consistent and parallel to the edge! Nice job! Jay

    Work on someone else's knife...

Certainly, there is no right or wrong answer to this question. I respect your opinion and it goes to the essence of what Knifedogs is all about. Many do small quanity production kinves and they may not care if a knife is "modified", others do one offs that they consider to be a "sculpture" which...

    Work on someone else's knife...

Interesting ethical quandry. Luckily nobody has thought enough of my skills as a knife maker to make this request. But, I think I would be reluctant. As a custom knife maker when you put your mark on a blade it is like a signature on a painting, different I think than putting a low restriction...

    First attempts WIP

So much for the link. Someday, I'll learn how to use a computer. Try the search function for "blade grind calculator".

    First attempts WIP

There is an excel spreadsheet that calculates how high you can hollow grind a blade. I think you may be trying to grind "higher" than an 8" wheel will permit, if you want the grind to be the same radius as the wheel. For example using a 10" wheel on 1/4" stock the grind would be about an inch...

    Semi Skinner Slipjoint Folder

Brian, I posted a WIP in the WIP/Tutorial sub-forum here on the second slippie which I named Lemony Snicket, for the film's subtitle "a series of unfortunate events" to give you a preview of the build. Jay

    Semi Skinner Slipjoint Folder

Brian, I know what you mean about folders being a "roller coaster". I'm taking a break from making my third right now. I was just about to throw it, my drill press and whatever else I could get my hands on out into the front yard. Argh! Jay

Very nice. Sturdy blade great grind. Jay

    Twin folders

Excellent! I think it is more difficult to make two knives (or three in this case) the same as a one off, by far. Very clean, well executed design IMHO. Impressive!

I think Bob Loveless was crazy or really good.

Frank: I agree with you 100%. The Ol' Rascal was no fool. The older he got the more short cuts he took. Frankly, I like making his knives, but they have a fault, IMHO, because after you sharpen it the first time, the you keep cutting into the blade, making for an increasingly ugly profile...

I think Bob Loveless was crazy or really good.

Squawsach: You're correct about the radius on the bottom of the guard and blade and the bit that extends down from the handle side. I mean the handle is 1/8" or so deeper than the ricasso. Here's some pics of a Loveless drop point that I haven't finished yet. If you have a drill press...

    First attempt at a slipjoint

I like them, too. Slim profile, almost like a toothpick. I think the smaller the knife profile, the more difficult. How thick is the steel and are you using precision ground, if you don't have a surface grinder? I started with 1/8" thick. It provides a little more steel for the learning curve in...

    Question About Loveless Bolts

Steve, I think the threads showing are part of using loveless bolts. See picture of Loveless Chute Knife: I think what Loveless did was use the head of the bolt on the part of the handle that faced away from the palm and then leave part of the head as the "bulls eye" which blended into the...
