Tips to avoid material screw ups, and our stories of thorough or creative failures

Matt - I rather enjoyed the vision of grinding on the ferro rod. I did several knives with firesteels matched to the handle a few years ago and had the same shenanigans with it being surprisingly brittle and having some sparky re-dos.

Show me your dust collection system

I am totally, totally with Ed on the "No woodworking dust evac system in a knife shop". If you're building furniture you're not going to make any sparks to cause ignition, supposedly - but after seeing multiple woodworkers have a total loss of the shop and in one case the shop and part of their...

hand sanding??? whats the big deal?

SRT - I've seen some Todd Begg radius blocks at Alpha Knife Supply. I also have made my own out of wood, scribing a line against some 3/4" stock with it held against my contact wheel to approximate the radius. Currently however, to finish my hollows I use a worn 5 micron belt with white...

Forge Welded Harley Chain Boot Knife

Bruce, that's gorgeous. Color scheme and the whole bit - I love it.

7" CPM 154CM Tanto, Green Mammoth Ivory

This one has been in the works for a long time and I'm thrilled to have it finished and up for sale. Any questions or comments are welcome, thank you! 7 1/8" long Crucible CPM 154CM blade, mirror finish, with deeply tapered tang. Mitered 304 stainless bolsters, satin finished. Gorgeous...

5.5" Fighter in CPM 154CM and Charcoal Ruby laminate

Thanks, everyone! As for the fit, having a surface grinder for the blades really is a great benefit - I also clamp down the 304 as it's not magnetic and surface the mating side of it as well, to a 220 grit finish. 416 is gravy as you can just slap it down on the magnetic chuck and go with it...

Bolster alignment how do you do it?

The through pins locate them - I temporarily affix one oversized bolster to a side of the knife either with CA glue or clamps, drill through the holes in the tang or frame, then you're free to clean the glue off or remove the clamps, then re-affix the now drilled bolster to an identical piece of...

    My first knife

As for improving, the first thing I'd recommend is better photos so prospective buyers can pick out more detail. It's a process, takes practice, and I'm hardly qualified to give advice. With the angle of the shot, it's hard to see if the joint between your blade and guard is cleanly soldered...

5.5" Fighter in CPM 154CM and Charcoal Ruby laminate

This is another recent one - it's big, 11" or so overall, with a 3/16" thick 5.5" cutting edge CPM 154CM blade, mitered stainless bolsters, and a finger-grooved two tone laminate grip. I built my typical heavy duty 10/12 oz. horizontal sheath for it and am quite pleased with the balance and...

    Steel supplier question

+1 on heat numbers and some evidence of the chain of source and supply. BTDT in structural steel and I find it applies just as firmly in our field with much smaller material.

Elk Shed Bowie in full tang 5160

Here's the latest one off the bench. The gentleman who commissioned the knife supplied me with a very nice local elk shed and I cut a great pair of scales from it for the project. It's a slightly upsized version of my regular 8" bowie, with a little more raise to the spine before the clip...

Can I use 440C for bolsters?

Laurence - Here's my two cents. I built a pair of fixed blade knives with 440C bolsters awhile ago, and overall I liked it. I found matching pin stock on eBay from an aircraft supply company and with a standard peening the connection was invisible even with a total mirror polish.

    Retired in New Mexico

Wallace - For kitchen knives or very small flat ground styles I've found it best to profile the blade, pierce any holes, deburr it, and then do any bevel grinding after heat treatment - you then must avoid heating the blade past the tempering range. I'd refer to the figure of .050 as minimum...

    Retired in New Mexico

Wallace - I shoot for .050 before heat treatment for my edge thickness, typically. Even air hardening steels or a plate quench setup will occasionally present with some distortion after they've cooled - I find that a "swing" of the cutting edge or tip to one side is more common than a...

    Recent work from spring 2014

This year really got off to a great start in a lot of ways, here's some standouts of knives that have been commissioned. This is a full custom piece based on my 7" chisel point tanto, with finger grooves, two control rings and a persuader style pommel, in 1/4" S30V with a gunmetal finish and...

Pair of 1095 4" drop point laminiate hunting knives

I recently finished up two hunting knives in 1/8" 1095 steel, they're hollow ground and by playing with the quench I was able to get some attractive hamon-like differential to show up on the blades during the polish. They've got a 45 micron/emery buff working finish, A36 carbon steel bolsters...

    Set of 3, 52100 striped ebony 3" kitchen utilty/petty

I've been doing more and more flat grinds, so it was time to take the plunge right to the spine and make some kitchen knives. These are out of 52100 high carbon, with striped ebony handle scales, with stainless corby fasteners. It's hard to describe how sharp they are without using expletives...

    Black Wolf Armory MIA??

Yup, I'm on the mend, back to business as usual as of yesterday the 25th. I'll keep it short - After a short hospital stay I was surprised with additional issues and attendant media and email outage which I was too ill to resolve. Ironically enough my last project before I got sick was some...
