Best and safest way of getting rid of galvanizing?

If the piece is small enough, a soak in battery acid will dissolve the galvanizing. john

gluing the kawol in it forge

Kaowool coated with Itc 100 will reflect the most heat. Almost any cast refractory will absorb, rather than reflect heat. it's best to have the most reflective surface closest to the surface of the forge. Cast refractory by itself, while having a longer forge life, will take longer to heat and...

Getting back into the shop...some new mosaic

Thanks Ed for the reply, Another quick question...from your pics, it appears that you may be using a blown forge with a thermocouple/solenoid valve to control the heat. If so, when the gas shuts off at the determined set temp, is the blower still operating while the burner is off? Using a ribbon...

Getting back into the shop...some new mosaic

Ed, Please excuse me for being a little behind in reading this discussion, but 2400 deg welding temp seems high to me. I usually weld 1095/L6 about 100 deg lower. If I go to 2400, it will often not stick (using flux). I use a Saymak 60kg and try to 'massage' the welds rather than beating them...

One thing to consider is that the blower will always be running even when the soleniod/thermocouple cut the gas off when the temp set point is reached. If you plan to make damascus, this could be a consideration as to where you place the burner entry. Just a thought. John Also, I wrote a how-to...

    Marketing Knives

I start this thread coming from a different/same direction as most reading this thread. For the past 20+ yrs, I have been a full time blacksmith making/marketing furniture, lighting, firescreens etc to a mostly upper scale clientele. One of the tenants I have learned is that most want a "unique"...

Do any of you guys sell in local retail shops? How do you go about doing that?

I sell in a local shop close by. The owner gets 25%. We discuss what price he thinks the market will bear and go from there. I pretty much trust his judgement but sometimes over ride it depending upon circumstances. If someone comes to my shop saying they saw it at his shop and buy it from me, I...

    Rolling mill speed

I think I just answered my own question as a friend just loaned me his copy of the McDonald rolling mill plans. McD calls for 20rpm w/2" rolls. JE

Don't know what sort of burner you have in mind, but if you're thinking of a ribbon burner, you should consider a larger solenoid...3/8-1/2". Josh is correct, imho, on the red hat. I've purchased several on ebay. You might talk to your local hvac guy. John

    Rolling mill speed

Hello , I am about to build a rolling mill and would like suggestions as to what the rpm/gear ratio should be. I'm thinking about using 2-3" diameter rolls. Does that sound about right? Thanks, John

    police knives

Please excuse my naivete', but the design of these blades just doesn't feel right to me. I have to wonder just how often they would be used for the stated use, and that if a more traditional blade would be of greater value. John

Couple of New Ones Done This Weekend

Mike, You don't need a light booth per se. A large soft (diffused for shiny blades) light source from above and slightly behind the blade will work. Also, several white fill cards to reflect light back into the blade placed in front of and off to the sides will help. You'll need to play with...
