    3 new damascus hunters

Hello to all, I finally made some time and finished some blades from billets made several months ago. The top and bottom are 5160/L6 and the middle is 1095/L6. Blade lengths range from 3 1/8" to 4 1/8". Thanks for looking and hopefully commenting. John Emmerling

    My website with knife gallery

Greetings, Here's the link to my site with a knife gallery. I've been making blades since Aug 2011 on a part time basis only as work in the shop is my main income. I can only wish I had more time to make blades... Thanks for looking. John Emmerling www.gearhartironwerks.com

I made my first peice of damascus

Don't know about others, but I'm a fan of setting the weld on the anvil because one can can 'feel' the set. It's much more difficult with a press as it's basically a 'guesstimation' based on previous welding experience. After the initial weld, press/hammer on... John

    new chef blade

Thanks to all for for the comments. The feather patterns are a challenge to me, especially the last weld closing the slit for the feather. I don't know why as every other weld goes well, but for some reason, the last is usually the most challenging. So, I keep making that pattern until my skill...

Couple of New Ones Done This Weekend

Just a quick suggestion on photographing the blade: crumble up a piece of masking tape and place it under the blade (out of sight) and rotate the blade back a little. I assume the light source is behind the blade and coming from above. You may also need to move the camera a little. This will...

    New custom oyster knife design.

So, I came home one eve from work and my wife said she broke my Leatherman blade (original issue). AAAAHHHHH! WHAT did you do? Shucking oysters. Wtf, we have an oyster knife. Couldn't find it she said. A minute later it was on the counter... Now we have several. Thanks for your pics. Please send...

    Welding lines in the billet

Hmmm, I guess I knew this was going to be the answer, and a pita it will be as it slows down the process. I'll tig the next billet as that will hopefully minimize the material waste. On another forum, Brian T suggested welding with kerosene for the final weld. I haven't had much success with...

    Good score this week

A friend, who is the sales manager of a steel company here in the NW, was looking at some of my damascus blades and asked what the shiny material was. After explaining my dilemma of finding a consistent supply of L6, he said that was no problem, and gave me a name and number of a saw mill, and...

A great score on some tools

2 hammers are nice to have, IF, the dies are interchangeable, or one is much larger than the other and that is not a possibility. If not, it's kind of a pita. You can always park the other hammer in the corner and sell it later. Just tell your wife it's another NECESSARY tool. :) John

    Welding lines in the billet

Hi, Today I welded a 'W' pattern billet, turned 90 deg and drew it out. Upon etching to see the pattern, I have lighter colored weld lines between the layers of the final weld. The fit up was good, the mill scale was ground, and the weld is good as well. Technically, it's a good billet except...

    New knife I just finished

I agree with you about the file work, and would consider a little more contrast for the bolster. Since it is hammered, a chemical dip to darken the valleys, and a little buffing to bring up the highlights, may be a nice addition. Just a suggestion... John

    3 new blades

Hi, Here are blades just completed: The feather damascus hunter and wandering feather chef blade are made from 1095/L6. The carbon hunter is 5160. Both hunters are approximately 8 5/8" overall with a 4 1/4" blade. Depth at the heal is 1 7/16" and thickness at the spine is 5/32-3/16". The...
