2013 KD Members Choice Awards - NON TACTICAL FIXED BLADE

I wouldn't normally nominate myself either, But I am rather proud of my Bowie (my 6th knife), not that its anywhere near some of the masterpieces shown on the forum but I was very proud when it won our club competition last December, so I am submitting it.

    First practice knife

Nice work RedHorse I like the advise about hanging the blade next to the grinder so you have something reminding you to be patient. It's very easy to wreck a knife quickly by being a bit impatient. Keep it up!

Here's my latest one (my 7th knife) -the followup to my competition Bowie

Hi Guys @Laurence - thanks for the compliment, I like your description DM -Design Modification, I'll remember that. I was thinking of doing a tapered tang, but decided that I would rather practice a few times first, rather than mess up a knife which I was making as a gift. I lightened the tang...

Here's my latest one (my 7th knife) -the followup to my competition Bowie

Hey Everyone A belated Happy New Year to you all, hope 2014 is an awesome year for everyone on the forum. After my success with my club competition Bowie (http://knifedogs.com/showthread.php?34604-Club-Competition-Bowie) my colleagues asked me if I would make a hunting knife for our boss, who...

    Club Competition Bowie

Hi Guys I finished off the sheath today - dying it, boning and sealing the edges. No antiqueing or any ageing done at all yet. I would have preferred a slightly lighter shade of brown, but I only had two dyes available - Oak (sort of red brown) and Mid brown - I wasnt able to lighten the mix.

    Club Competition Bowie

Hi Sagebrush Thanks, I appreciate it. As for your question on Wild Olive - it may be related, but I dont believe it is exactly the same tree, Wild olive (Olea africana) is a gnarly tree that is slow growing, and found mostly here in South Africa. The wood is close-grained and very hard. The...

    Club Competition Bowie

Hi guys I spent a few hours the past couple of nights making a sheath for the bowie. To try keep with the "cowboy era style" of the bowie I made a Mexican Loop Sheath. I wanted to make a carved leather sheath with old west style carving, however in the end resorted to stamping a tri-basketweave...

Looking for advice on optimizing grip for a hunting knife

Hi Laurence Thanks a lot for the advice - I have had a few other knifemaker friends here in SA comment and tell me that I should be looking at canvas micarta or G10 (specifically "Hunter Orange") - there is no way you should lose a hunter orange handled knife in the bush, whereas a normal wood...

Looking for advice on optimizing grip for a hunting knife

Hi guys Thanks for the advice so far I hadnt thought of the latex gloves - they would add some grip - but I dont know anyone this side of the pond who wears them when hunting. I have done some searching but havent been able to find any Fullerplast locally (South Africa) - not to mention I...

Looking for advice on optimizing grip for a hunting knife

Hi Everyone After my recent success with my competition Bowie - I have been asked by my colleagues to make a custom hunting knife for our (very good) boss, a bow hunter - who is leaving the company due to restructuring. I am currently working out the design, based on a couple of nice...

    Club Competition Bowie

Hi Akey Thanks, Glad you like it - especially the comment about the knot. Despite the crack / knot I like the handle a lot - I think the pattern in this piece of wood is very attractive.

    Club Competition Bowie

Hi Everyone It's been quite a while since I posted anything on the forum, I have still been reading and lurking for most of the past year, but no contributing. In the time since I joined the forum about three years ago just after I made my first knife, my actual knifemaking time has been very...

    Another Kephart Pattern

Beautiful work Steven If you don't mind me asking how do you get that blade finish? I like O1 as a blade steel but find that it needs care to prevent corrosion. Does your tumbled acid washed finish wear well? What sort of acid do you use? How is the tumbling done? Is it a similar process...

A new line of tactical tomahawks

Hi James These look really cool - just the kind of thing I need to get myself. When heat treating them - what RC value do you aim for after tempering? Are they differentially hardened? Thanks
