Suggestions on where to direct our efforts

While I agree that the meeting was great, viewing the grinding or kydex was a bit tough. Something I'd like to propose, a camera setup for shared viewing. Thanks to modern tech, this is pretty simple and cheap. 1. Old cell phone or tablet with decent camera 1a. Tripod for the phone 2. Google...

New forge - feedback on what you see

Here's a video of the forge at the hammer-in last weekend. After about 12 hours it started to run out of propane, but held up very nicely for the first and second day. TC showed 2300° F at the front and 2150° F at the rear, while running at 15-17 PSI producing about 80,000 BTU _MS6Ah1Ljq8

New forge - feedback on what you see

New video uploaded. A bit windy out, but still shows a better result. I still need to move the port to the bottom of the forge instead of the top. 866u3raSm2c

New forge - feedback on what you see

I know the hose is bad. The forge was sitting on a BBQ grill and the hose wouldn't work from the other direction. I made sure the hose didn't actually touch the forge and it was only operating for about 30 seconds total. However, I don't like that it's even possible to position it that way...

New forge - feedback on what you see

Thanks for the feedback, Ed. The burner is already off-center, but no where near the angle I intended. It should be angled in about 1/2" below perpendicular to the chamber to give optimal swirl. It's about 1 1/2" below perpendicular now. It's also about 2" long now, but will be about 3/4"...

New forge - feedback on what you see

New forge - new video uploaded 8-13 Hi all! I don't get around here much anymore, but thought I'd drop in and try to get some feedback. I'm working on a new forge, a bit bigger than the Atlas. It's an 8" steel tube with IFB for insulation. This is done by jigging up 2 bricks side by side...

    My son's first damascus billet!

This was over at Dave's house. Graham's anvil is mounted on a 6' long 6x6 cemented into the ground with a piece of horse stall mat between the anvil and post to reduce the noise. However, he's been paranoid about annoying the neighbors. I only wish the neighbors dog was the same.

    My son's first damascus billet!

Recent upgrades to the burner on the Atlas mini forge prompted a small hammering session over at Dave Larsen's. Graham made this billet of cable damascus. The forge we used was the first forge I made. Straight in the side, no angle, so many improvements since this forge. I can't wait to try...

    Etching Stencil question

Tracy is correct about AC/DC. Also of note is the electrolyte used. 110A will leave a crisp white on stainless, 94 will leave a nice black. I've wasted a lot of time trying to get a black mark from 110a.

    Son's knife #3 - Kirinite Santoku

Graham,13, just finished this for his mom for Christmas. He bought the blank at the hammer-in last August and did the bevel that day. He originally did white scales, but decided he liked the orange better. He's done 99% of the work himself, but Dave Larsen sharpened it. He originally had a 400...

Nice video, it turned out very clear. Can we edit out the first etching attempt since I tried to mark first and messed it up?

Could somebody pull my cable damascus out of the vermiculite and oil it down for me? I'll pick it up next year, yeehaw!

    Grinder In a Box Questions

I got a quote of roughly $50 per piece from one company, so I'm not surprised by the $1252 quote. That's why I put all the parts on a single piece. I have converted to using pilot holes only, since CNC Plasma isn't very good at making holes.

    knife making tools, introductory level

I know it's been a while, but I wanted to respond to this. The Atlas Mini is designed for bladesmithing, not blacksmithing. You couldn't make a horseshoe in it if you wanted, because it's a bladesmith's forge. I've seen a couple others that were close, but none were as specific as the Atlas...

Been here a while, time to introduce myself

My name is Charles, and I designed and built the Atlas Knife Company etchers and mini forges, named after my son, Atlas. When I build a bigger forge, it will be called the Graham, after my other son. I live in Iowa and like to fish and play catch with the boys.

    Latest electro etcher design

Here are the plans for my latest etcher design. It is a bit closer to Chris Crawford's design than my previous design. The reason for the change is the lack of availability of 12VAC transformers. I've added a lighted arcade button to the plans, making it much easier to pulse etch the DC. The...

    Hello

My name is Charles, I live in Des Moines, Iowa, and have been making knives for 1½ years now. I focus more on usable knives than safe queens, mainly making kitchen knives. My first knife was an S30v linerlock, my latest was an S35VN garasuki inspired wedding cake knife for my sister-in-law.

    Stainless

I only use 6Al4V for bolsters and guards. Maybe not the exact same color, but it's titanium and that makes it cool!

How do you hang/sort your belts?

Available at Harbor Freight. Plastic, cheap, just the right size for 2" belts. I think they're like $3.99 each.
