Having a hard time finding a used 1.5 hp motor. i got a line on a barely used Leeson 1 hp for $75. has has anyone built one with a 1 hp motor? if so how does it run?

I built my NWG and started out with with a 1 hp.I worked with for only a few weeks, after that I wired my shop
with 220 and changed the 1hp for a 1.5hp
A 1 hp will work but the 1.5 will make you think you have a completely different grinder and I am sure
a 2 hp would be that much better.Good luck

God bless,Keith

Uncle Billy, A 1 hp will work but I don't think that you will be satisfied with it. Like Keith said you probably won't be satisfied with it so will before long buy a larger motor. Just consider that when you get the bigger motor you have actually paid $75.00 more for it, unless you can sell it or have another use for it.

I have a new 1.5 hp for $165.00 plus $40.00 shipping or a total of $205.00
a new 2 hp for $198..50 plus $40.00 shipping or a total of $238.50

Let me know if I can help.

thanks for the input guys, what you said is what my gut was telling me. i will have to check the "grinder fund" to see if can swing a new motor. i was hoping to save the money for the and 8" contact wheel. oh well, i mainly do flat grinding anyway.

Billy, if you use a rotary tool arm similar to what I put on my workshop grinders you can save the price of all but one 2" wheel and use that for the 8" poly wheel and still be money ahead. If you get 2 2" wheels for the slack belt set up and 2 2" wheels for the flat platen set up you will have spent about $200.00. If you use the rotary arm you have 1 8" wheel and 1 2" wheel for about $150.00.

I 1hp will work for a simple 3 wheel set up with just a contact wheel. You will still be able to stop it by pressing hard which will be fairly annoying after awhile. You will easily be able to stop it grinding as a 4 wheel set up with a flat platen. Wheels add friction and mass to move along.

I have a 1 HP motor and jam cpm154 ,154cm , 440c, and 1084 into a blaze orange 36 grit as hard as I can and it will make the steel glow red if I do it long enough with out stalling the motor. Mybee our Canadian electricity is stronger than yours in the states , lol . I have since bought a new 2hp off wayne only because I have a vfd to go with it for sanding woods at slow speeds is a must. kellyw
