air travel with expensive knives..

one suggestion for traveling with an expensive knife collection...
pack the knives into a TSA approved locking gun case. Put a cheap gun into the case and declare it when checking in your luggage. You will fill out a tag, allow a glancing inspection into the case and then hand off your luggage. It will stay secured or at least better secured than typical luggage all the way through the process. When you pick up your luggage, you will have to go to a luggage security area, show ID and your receipt. They will hand over your gun case and all of your knives. No airline wants to deal with a stolen gun so they keep any declared firearm under much higher security. Guns have been and will be stolen while flying despite all this so it isn't fool proof but it's certainly much better than leaving valuable knives in unsecured luggage and hoping it gets there..

Now that is a good idea! An old cheap single barrel shotgun would be perfect - no hassle about pistols, rifles or any of that. The TSA approved gun case will cost more than the old shotgun - I'd expect anyway.
