Blade Leather

There was a time when Tandy leather was what I used....then I got my hands on some "premium" oak tanned leather from a well respected tannery...... yeah, it was considerably more money, but it made a night/day difference in the entire sheath making process, for the better. Sometimes you never know what you're missing, until you have it. :)
 
Well, I guess I need to find a joint to get my hands on some reasonable new leather. I started two sheaths and two holsters last night actually...
 
I'm almost out of the Tandy leather so I don't mind finding a new source for leather, especially if it is higher quality.
Another question, do you guys use the same leather for the spacer (for lack of a more knowledgeable term)? I've read some makes use a much stiffer shoe sole type leather.
 
I use the same leather for the welt. I save scraps and try and cut them from those. Just be sure and match the thickness, sometimes it looks kind of wonky with a different thickness in the middle.
 
When I am in a town with a Tandy I'll buy leather. Online? Nope. Did it once....They have all levels of quality. I suspect that things that don't sell well in the store get mailed out for obvious reasons...lol.

I like leather working more and more...what i don't like is the subtle pressure to go fast because of the lack of profit in a sheath/knife combo. I think it is harder to make money on a sheath than a knife....and it's hard enough on a knife.

Now If I was a hobbiest that was retired I would slow down and enjoy the sheath-making...lol.

I find leather amazing...how it reacts to different things. Kind of like heat treating...still amazes me to finish a knife and see it cut for the first time...

Hey....it's the simple pleasures....lol.
