Dennis, I put 440C in at 1200 bring to 1850 F. 20 to 25 min.air cool, draw back 300 for 2 hr. should give you 56 to 58 RC. if you want it softer go from 400 to 500 . Deane
 
250 temper sounds a bit low. I normally temper twice at 450f for that type of stainless.
also it looks like that corner created a stress riser/fracture.
 
Deane and Bossdog: I think that both of your are correct. Heat riser from a too square of corner and poor heat treating/tempering. I will adjust both of them and try again. Thank you for your input.
 
Yep, that's pretty much what a monkey tool is. If that was is centigrade it might have been a little high. Try looking up a heat treatment schedule for 440C.

I used too use a lot of 440-C, I use to temper at 375-380 twice for two hours each time.
250 sounds really low, I don't know that you would get any tempering results at that temperature.
