Certified Cold Rolled 5160

Thanks for the input everyone.

I am going to try and work out the details today and hopefully have a price by tomorrow!!

O.K. everyone, here is the deal...

I got the certs today and this is not exactly what I was under the impression it was. This is what is called, "single pass hot rolled annealed". What that is is that it is actually hot rolled and then run one time through the cold rolls. The steel has been annealed and pickled so there is no mill scale. Just a nice dull steel color. The dimensional area is square. It is nothing like the 5160 steel extruded for springs, with that rounded edge. All of the contents are right at the top of the chart for 5160. It really is nice stuff. I have hand rubbed 5 large blades from this stock and yet to find any inclusions. That is not to say that there won't be any on the next five. But that could happen with any steel.

The certification is as follows:

C .5900
Mn .8000
P .0100
S .0020
Si .1800
Al .0380
Cu .0400
Ni .0300
Cr .8300
Mo .0200
Sn .0030
V .0040

The steel was manufactured by Blair Strip Steel Co.
In Pennsylvania U.S.A.

I am still going to try and purchase the steel if there is enough interest.
The price will be $4.65 per pound + shipping.
An 8' bar weighs just over 44 lbs.

Please let me know if you are interested.

Steve

I'll definitely go for one bar and might possibly swing two if it helps to make the deal. I normally work stainless but that's a really good price on 5160.

It would be a plus if they can be cut to 4' lengths for shipping and to make it easier for one guy to wrestle at the bandsaw.

Sounds like at the dimensions you're talking this is more for the big dogs. No band saw here so I'll have to back down.

I'm in for one, maybe two depending on how knife sales go.

I don't care how long it is as long as it can be shipped without bending it. I actually like longer pieces better because the end of the bars is where you have to lay out certain blades to prevent waste.
