Custom bread knives

Most everyone has seen if not used a fiddle bow bread knife. I've had one for years and love it. So I decided to make some custom ones. The darker one is ipe wood,the other is black walnut. I'm keeping my eyes open for other big pieces of pretty wood to make more of these. I also have another design change in the works to make it easier to controll the cut. I make the 12" blades from worn out metal cutting bandsaw blades,I leave the teeth on there as a novelty like knives made from a file or rasp,and grind the cutting edge with the big serrations you see in these photos for an edge more suitable for cutting bread. These knives are 18" long overall with 12" blades.

Your thoughts,comments and constructive criticsism are welcome.

I'm still thinking about that,the mass produced one sell or $25.00 to $45.00 ,I'm thinking maybe $50.00 to $75.00 for ones like these. What do you think?

Way to go Calvin! I always wondered what could be done with old band saw blades.
If I was to come face to face with your black walnut one I would have to have it!
Innovation and craftmanship hitting head on!
 
I've never seen one of those before! May be a USA v UK thing though. :)

So I assume that it's handy for getting the same thickness of bread slice each time?

Yes,very easy to control the thickness of the slices,you can slice up to 1" with mine.

I think the 50-$75.00 is reasonable and more depending on how exotic of woods you can come up with?

Also If you could possibility set them up with a anchored screw or another way to make the blades replaceable by the buyer and include a extra blade or two I think you could ask more because of the lifetime usage that would allow?

Up to $100.00 plus for the Cadillac of your line. Have a middle and a Caddy price point and leave the entry level to the mass producers.

I appreciate your advice,you have much more experience selling kitchen knives than I do.
I found a local source for hardwoods,went to visit them last week and bought a huge piece of fiddle back maple and some sapelli so I'm going to give them a try and see how they turn out.

GO FOR IT! Ain't nuttin to it. These are the easiest knives I've ever built.
I build these to relax after building slipjoints and liner locks.:biggrin:
Who would like to see a tutorial on making one of these?
