Damascus Forging Hammer?? (pic heavy)

I've been toying around with an idea for a while now, and a couple of weeks ago I had a Damascus billet that wasn't going the way I wanted....so true to what I tell folks....I didn't make a mistake...but an opportunity to excel. I had a BIG twist billet that wasn't coming out like I wanted, so I decided that it was time to make some Damascus Angle Peen Hammers!

Here's the first of 3 that I got out of the resulting billet....

Now I personally think that this is something that every respectable Bladesmith NEEDS!:D

I have to say that is the most beautiful hammer I have ever seen!!!

J/K. Don't send it to me as I can't afford it just now with the other tools I'm waiting to get...But BOY, I wish I had the change for that right now! :D

What is the face? It sure sets off the damascus. Interesting handle too. With that I bet that I would not have a problem convencing my students that you do not use your forging hammer to hit punches, you use your punch hammer. Forging hammers ONLY hit hot steel.2thumbs2thumbs2thumbs
 
The face is the same material, I just polished it out.
Amen Wayne! Forging hammers are for hot steel! I started building hammers after a couple of students put dings in the face of the #300 Trenton with commercial hammers. I normally build the hammers out of 4140 and heat treat it to Rc 52-53, which is softer than most anvil faces. That way when somebody makes a "miss lick", all I have to do is lightly grind a hammer face, rather than work my backside off to fix a ding in the anvil face. This one is comprised of 1080 and 15N20, and if my calculations where right, I tempered it back to be about the same Rc as the 4140 hammers.

Ed, I would have to hang that on the wall for show as a work of art. I would be afraid of dinging it up, especially the way I swing a hammer.

Yes.....somebody had to go and do it....I figured it might as well be me! :D

Things are going well here. I'm just about all healed up from the lung surgery...still have this bothersome cough, but the Docs say that will hang on for several months. Getting ready to start my push for the Blade Show....and basically just trying to make both ends meet the middle.

Been keeping an eye on the cool stuff that you've been doing too!

Ed, Glad to hear your on the mend! I was talking with Mary awhile back and she said she is training the new staff that will be working at Blade this year so I think there's hope for a better show this year. Hope you do well there!
