disk grinder

Its time to add a disk grinder to the shop and I am looking for some input , have you built your own or purchased one . I have a HF and it runs like a HF.

Built my own on the cheap. Free 3 phase 56C motor, $60 Cheapie VFD, 1/4" Steel I had, unused 1deg Aluminum disc off of Ebay $60, Harbor freight stand $30, misc wiring $25. Under $200 total works fantastic. Next one I build I will use better components but I didn't know how good or bad the Disc grinder would work for me and I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something I might not have used. Indispensable IMO!

Thank you,

I have two disc grinders in the finish shop....and one in the hot shop.

The two in the finish shop are both variable speed, one is the 1hp/VFD from Beaumont (KMG), and the other is a Dayton 90VDC 1HP & DC speed controller. The key to both is the discs used, or more correctly the disc systems....

I simply couldn't use a disc grinder without it. It's an arbor/hub that holds face plates magnetically. What's so nice about it is that you can get both flat and 1 degree tapered disc faces. The 1 degree tapered disc faces are just awesome! They allow for grinding past the center of rotation, without the other side of the disc trying to grab/throw upward whatever you're grinding on.

I have several of the disc faces, which means I can keep various grits, on the faces, ready to go....and change them in just a few seconds. It also saves a lot of sandpaper in that I don't have to tear off/replace a barely used paper, when I need another grit, as would be necessary with single disc/face.

Here's the Beaumont/KMG:

And the Dayton/DC (you can see rack with the extra disc faces standing by)

I normally don't have the table on this one..... but every now and then the table does come in handy.

I went with this one for some quick finish work, I really like it. It is made by "BuckTool"and for a small sander it is the best one out there at around $205.00. My other disk sander is as those pictured above but runs on 220 volts which I have found to be a very good thing. I do like the looks of the variable speed disk sander but I do not have one of those.

I have the 1hp/VFD from Beaumont and I have nothing bad to say about it. Its well built and I find that I am using it more all of the time. I bought the table to go with it, but I never seem to use it for anything.
