Excavator Spring

I had a friend stop by the house on saturday and he brought over this small spring off of an excavator.
We cut a six inch piece and forged it out to 1 1/2" by 1/4 by 34" cut in in two and still have a little left over.
The spring is 1 1/2" thick. That is a 10 lb sledge next to the spring.

That's a nice friend you have! There's a lot you can make from stock that thick, and who can count the number of knives in that beast!

Spring steel!! lol I could'nt help myself.. :D I was wondering the same thing really.. anyone know or care to venture a guess?

Yes, spring steel. It could be any one of several. The only thing for sure is that if it has enough carbon in it for a spring, it has enough carbon in it for a blade. The only way to tell what it is for sure is to find some place to have it analysed. Mystert metal is mystery metal.

Spring steel is a given, I was wondering if there was something more specific. At any rate, thank you for shinning some light on the question.

One time a guy on bladeforums was given a set of dump truck springs, weighed several hundred pounds. Sent some out for analysis and it came out as 1040. That may have nothing to do with your spring, but it is a good illustration that all "spring steel" isn't created equal. If you've got that big of a piece, it would pay to send some out for analysis. If it's good, there are alot of blades in there. If it's not, there's alot of wasted time in there.
