Getting a new shop by default

Well I was grinding the other day and apparently some hot metal got stuck up in the wall behind the grinder. The whole back wall of my shop caught fire. I am glad I bought some fore extinguishers for the shop a couple of months ago. No one was hurt but my shop was good a ruined. The insurance agree to cover it and the builders started work today and said it would take a week or two to complete. So I will have new benches built and new work area. I am now installing a vacuum system so this wont happen again.

Keep your eyes peeled when vacuuming Titanium sparks. I got to put out a small fire the other day with a spray bottle of windex when Ti sparks hit some grinding dust.

I move the extinguishers closer to the grinder.

Ouch! Glad you are okay and that the insurance company is taking good care of you. You must have a good insurance company. Best of luck on recovering everything and hope you are back up and running soon.

Glad you got it sorted out. Man, that could have been nasty! Glad the insurance is taking care of you :) Post up some pics when the builders are done.

Glad you are okay. This is a good reminder of the less than obvious dangers that can occur in the shop. A large piece of sheet metal as a grinding backstop is a good idea, I was lucky enough to inherit a stop sign which I have mounted against the wall behind my grinders.
Sounds like your insurance company is doing good business. Not all are like that.

Kyle, sorry it happened but as always, it could have been worse. Glad to hear that you are rebuilding so quickly.

Yes I was fortunate in this deal. My wife was a agent so they take good care of us and the builder is a friend of mine and realizes this is my only source of income right now so he is working quickly. He has got the wall rebuild but just waiting on the inspector. we will then work on some new benches I redesighned the shop so I will now have alot more room in the center as well as bench space. It will be great!

You came out well on that, if your shop is attached to your house , and you derive income from it, most insurance companies will not insure it. If they did not know that and a claim arises they will usually pay and then cancel the policy. If it is freestanding on your property, with the correct set-backs they will usually insure the home but not the shop if income is derived from it. Glad things worked out for you.
