Glass platen?

How often do you guys have to change yours? Does the pyro glass wear better than say a hardened a2 platen?

Appreciate it!

Yes. The changing times will be very different but dependant on use and type of use. I do all my contour grinding on the flat platen with the glass. It is the first area behind the table to show wear on the glass platen. Frank

It will typically wear better than a hardened tool steel, and as Frank mentioned, the area just behind your work rest will start to show wear first.

I probably try to change mine out about once per year, if even that. It all depends on how much I'm doing. Then again, I'm not a full time maker, so YMMV based on how often you grind.

For me, compared to a hardened steel platen, it last about 12X or more longer. When I was using hardened 440C or A2 platens, they required refacing at least once a month. Since switching to glass, the average change time is about a year. More often then not I have to change glass because I do something dumb. like drop the platen or drop something onto it while it's sitting on the bench! :)

Awesome guys thank you. I am having a slot machined into a thicker platen, so I can seat the glass inside, just using mounting tape and even if it lets go, it wont fly out because of the slot.

Appreciate the help gentleman.

Ed- Yeah my buddy went through 3 in a week cause he kept slamming his work rest into it.....
