There are a couple books out there that you can get the basics out of. It's easyer to learn the knots if you have someone show you but they can be learned from the books.
The Bruce Grant book Encyclopidia(sp) of Knots is a good one for referance. There are a few tools you need to have to make strings but you can buy already prepared lace to learn with.
