B brad stallsmith Well-Known Member Jan 11, 2011 #3 I recommend no thinner than .015-.020 on steels that do not need an oil quench. Oil quenching steels need to be a bit thicker, maybe up to .030. Any thinner & you stand the chance of getting an edge that looks like cooked bacon. Brad
