I put a guard on using JB weld. The customer wants the guard darkened but the only way to darken the stainless guard id to heat it to red and let it cool. I need to remove it so I dont mess up the temper. How do I get the JB weld to release?

My first try would be a long soak in acetone. (I have not tried it)
Next would be to immerse the blade in water up to the guard and heat the guard with a torch. I have done this and it worked. JB is basically an epoxy. But, there was some thin crusty clean up which could be a pia inside the guard.

I may go another route and darken the guard on the knife with the Caswell black oxide gel for stainless. You can apply the gel in a very thin coat with a small brush after taping everyting else off.

I put it in the oven for 30 min at 300 and it came off. I have not used the jell where can I get that from?

I have removed guards and scales by submerging the tang end in boiling water just deep enough to cover the guard area, for 20 minutes.
