I have about 80 pieces of 1095 steel for pocket knife blades that are heat treated to 60rc and want to know if you can make a hamon line to anneal the top of the blade so I can cut a nail nick. dont really like the way a stone cuts the nick so i want to use a dove tail cutter for the nick. If this is possible what kind of clay and how does the process work. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to say that isn't going to happen at this point after they have been hardened already.

I would put the nail nick in by putting a dremel cut off wheel in your drill press and run it at high speed. Put the blade in a small vice at the desired height and run it back and forth against the cut off wheel to cut the nick. You would need to be careful to maintain a consistant depth. Dan

It might be possible to draw the temper of the spine back enough for your dove tail cutter to work, but on a blade as small as most folder blades, I wouldn't want to try it... and even then it would not be annealed steel, only spring-tempered steel, so it would still wear out your cutter prematurely.
