Inconel 600 ???

Has anyone tried using Inconel 600 in Damascus??

I have a friend who used to work in the aerospace field. He gave me a 50 lb coil of it. I am planning on using some of it in a can, but was wondering if I am going to need to pump argon through it to get it to weld to carbon steel.

Any help would be appreciated.....

The 14-17% Chromium would worry me some.

I think using argon would be essential.

When you get 50 pounds for free, that is just screaming for experimentation!!

I love to experiment!!!

I think I'll have to get a billet all made up with some i it and then try and weld it at the Summit in 2 weeks.
I'll bet some of the people attending will not believe how argon works!!

Can you explain how you are using argon? Are you pulling a vacume on the can then injecting the argon?

I do know that Inconel 600 is prone to work hardening (we work with it a lot in the nuclear field) but ive never tried welding it in a billet. I do know it makes really nice fittings!

Very intrested in hearing how this works out for you.

The argon is plumbed into the can. The same way as it is done when making stainless Damascus.
There is a 3/8 pipe welded to a 3/8 hole in the lower part of the back of the can. ( basically next to whatever you are using as a handle) Then an argon hose flow meter and bottle are attached to the other end of the 3/8 pipe. A small hole is drilled in the upper corner of the opposite end of the can ( just like you would in any can of Damascus) so the oxygen can be expelled. The argon is denser than the oxygen, so the oxygen gets expelled out the small hole and gives you a clean welding environment.
 
Hiii,

Inconel 600 has excellent corrosion & heat resistant. Inconel 600 is strong in nature & can be easily formed. But inconel can welded only by cold work as it hard & strong alloy.
Carbon Steel is cheapest as highly compared inconel.
