We are going to try for our first gathering of Kentucky Knifemakers April 24-25, 2010 at the KCA Knife Show in Shepherdsville, KY.

Details (subject to change)

What:

Our first gathering of Kentucky knifemakers. The agenda has not been worked out yet but at the very least this will be a meet-and-greet, show-and-tell get together. We may have some demonstrations or presentations of interest to knifemakers. We will discuss among those attending what we want to do from there; Form a Kentucky Knifemakers Guild? Plan more informal gatherings or hammer-ins? Plan a show of our own?

Who:

Primarily any knifemaker residing in Kentucky or any Kentuckian wanting to get into knifemaking. Others are welcome to attend but our primary goal to to promote the craft of Kentucky artists hopefully utilizing some resources available through state craft and tourism agencies.

Where:

At the Kentucky Cutlery Association Knife Show, Paroquet Springs Conference Center, Shepherdsville, KY.
I-65 exit 117 about 20 miles south of Louisville, KY.

When:

Saturday April 24 - Sunday April 25, 2010. Sit-down meeting time(s) to be determined depending on whether any are showing at the knife show.

I really want to, but it is dependent on my wife's work schedule. So I'm a "Maybe".

Even she wants me to!! LOL (she is really supportive of my old/new obsession.)

Less than two weeks away and here's where we stand. I sent out emails to 61 KY Knifemakers regarding a get together at the KCA knife show.

Yes = 5
No = 9
Maybe = 3
No response = 44

The response has been a little underwhelming.

Of those definitely attending, at least 3 of us will have a table at the show.

I have a meeting room reserved for us in the Conference Center after the show closes on Saturday a 6:00 PM but if it's only going to be 5 or 6 of us we might as well go to a nearby restaurant.

The show only runs until 3:00 PM on Sunday so we have time to do something then if anybody is interested.

I just have too many other things that weekend to do the show but I can try and make the get together.

Saturday during the day is best. I have to attend another engagement late in the day.

I would like to be there but it's the middle of turkey season and my huntin buddy from pennsylvania is coming in.

Yep it's right in the middle of turkey season. I don't know why they moved this shows dates, I did it last year and it was later. I know it wasn't during turkey season or I wouldn't have had a table.

Update

We only have 5 who have said they will be there and at least 3 of those (including me) will have a table at the show. I have 3 "maybes".

Since most of us will be at our tables during the day lets plan on meeting 30 minutes after the show closes on Saturday at 6:30 PM. We have a separate room in the conference center available to us where they normally hold the auction (no auction this year).

Since this looks like it will be a pretty small group, we can either meet there or go to a nearby restaurant and talk over dinner.

I had no offers of demonstrations or seminars so this will be a meet-and-greet and we can talk about what, if anything, we want to do going forward as a group.

It is obvious that since we are scattered all over the state timing and location will be a big hurdle for us to organize a group.

I would still like to stage a hammer-in type of get together sometime this year. I have an an offer to do that at a knifemakers shop later this year but it will be pretty limited in the number of people we can host. I will post more about that later.

unfortunately, my truck decided that it doesn't want to brake anymore, ala wheel cylinder on the left rear tire and caused some nasty damage to the drum, etc. so I'll not be attending the shoot this weekend, nor the show that evening.

I am still waiting to find out if my wife has to work Saturday night. I won't know that until in the morning. If she isn't working that night, I will be there. If she does have to work, I won't. No babysitter and the kids are just too young to leave alone.
