When I look up states legal to own switch blades , it says it is against federal law to sell across state lines even if it is legal to own in that state

YEP! And if you're caught doing it, the punishment is basically the same as if you were selling fully automatic firearms across state lines.

Here in Montana you can own a switchblade, but the blade can be no longer than 1 1/2". Collectors, who register their collection with the local Sheriff's office are an exception.

Between state and federal laws (depending what you specific state law(s) dictate) unless you're willing to jump through all the hoops involved, it's not worth the risks if you "just wanna own one".

Thanks I have a Dalton Assassin for sale and the guy wanting to buy it said it was ok to sale across state lines that he had done it several times , I thought I was right about this , he is the buyer , the feds won't go after him , they will come after me and I'm not going to jail for anyone period i am claustrophobic i cannot handle a prison cell

How do places like bladehq sell to basically every other state then? Assuming that the Dalton wasn't produced within OP's state, how did it get there?

I wouldn't even try to speculate. I suppose a person, or a business can take whatever chances they are willing to, and they might get away with it 1, or even a 1,000 times before they get nailed.

All I know is that I've watched vendors at many knife shows get quietly escorted out in "silver bracelets" because the individuals were selling "switchblades" "under the table". Not somewhere I want to be, so I simply steer clear of that type of knife.

Oh but when you get caught you have just violated federal laws!!! Believe me you do not what the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, knocking on your door because they usually do it with a battering ram!

Yeah that just isn't worth the trouble.I believe we can have them here in up state NY but only when hunting.I still don't bother with them and I don't use a clip on my pocket knife out of sight out of mind.

I've been buying, selling and collecting knives for a couple decades now and can tell you what I've seen.

People have been buying and selling automatics across state lines since as long as I can remember and I have never heard of anyone being caught and prosecuted.

Not saying it doesn't happen, just saying it isn't common AFAIK.

I'm not advocating breaking the law. I'm just saying that the reality is that it goes on all the time. Some forums even have a dedicated automatic knife sales areas and I can guarantee you that a large portion of those are sold across state lines.

Until recently, autos were illegal in Michigan where I live so I never messed with them.

So could you sell it without consequences? Probably 98 or 99 percent chance. But there's always that 1 or 2 percent that can bite you in the...
