I found a jet 1 hp , one of those double bag dust collectors locally on craigs list, do they work very good and how loud are they? I dont know much about dust collectors except that I need one.
 
I keep thinking I want one and then I keep hearing about how often they blow up when you put anything other than wood saw dust into them. I bet have almost bought that Jet or Grizz version a dozen times but still haven't pulled the trigger. If you do get one, report back on it would you?
 
I don't know anything except you have to be REAL careful not to blow hot steel sparks into one if it also has wood dust in it. Or aluminum for that matter.
 
It is going to be mounted probably 15-17 feet away I would think most sparks would cool by then but i could be wrong. I also though of adding the can with water in it that would solve most of the problem right?
 
Two parts here:
One 15-17 feet away is twice the distance it was designed to pull. You need to use original length of hose, usually around 8’ that’s why it portable.

Second is a match head is still hot enough to burn you after it goes out. So the sparks will still set fire to your dust collector or at least melt you bag.

The safest for metal sparks is to cleanup after grinding and they have cooled.

Slighty off topic... if you use a box fan with a furnace filter taped over it behind your grinder like I do, don't let it get so dirty that you look up and notice 1/3 is glowing orange! That happened to me the other day. Now I clean it at the end of each day with my shop vac, once everything is cool.
 
Well James how did your homemade inferred heater work?

I think you nailed what I was trying to say, “ it doesn’t take very much to start a fire”.
The dust collector will be fine for collecting cold dust.
