Some of my favorite backgrounds to use in a light tent for pictures are 12"x12" floor tiles I get at Home Deport or Lowes. I have a couple dozen and pick one that goes best with the handle color. They only cost a few bucks apiece.
Next time you are in one of those places stroll over to the tile section and have a look.
Another thing to look for might be Daylight fluorescent light bulbs. The little curly ones. The brighter the better. Use a couple of these to give your pictures a truer looking color. If you shoot under just regular light bulbs, the photo's take on a red tinge and always seem a bit blurry as the auto focus on most cameras seem to be just a bit off under incandescent bulbs. Under regular fluorescent the picture takes on a blue, cold look. Neither tone is terrible in the right conditions but generally, you will get a better pic with the daylight bulbs.
