Pins

Hello all - just a question here. In a folder with 416 SS bolster, or any other bolster - is a 3/32" pin any easier to hide than an 1/8" pin? Does size of pin really matter, even up to 3/16"? Using a taper reamer in hole, the hole is cleaned good with alcohol, and pin sanded bright, then cleaned with alcohol?

Thanks to all for any guidance and suggestions.

See ya'll Sat in VanCleave, MS.

Thanks Don - that's sorta of what I was thinking that size shouldn't matter for hiding pins. On a side topic, is there an advantage for 3/32" pins vs 1/8" pins for a slipjoint or lockback folder?

Ken,
I use 3/32" pins for my pivot and spring pins. One reason is,they are all the same size and it simplifies things. All the same size bits and reamers. And besides,1/8" pins just don't look right in the handle of a small folder, they look too big. Peening a 3/32" pin is easier than peening a 1/8" pin, less work to do. You can hide a 1/8" pin,no problem, just the bigger the pin the bigger the hammer, more work, peening a 1/6" pin is less work and I use a smaller hammer.
See you next weekend,I hope this rain stops for at least that one day.

Thanks Don - sorta how I felt about it myself.

Calvin - I've been using 3/32" pins myself - they seem to work good, plenty strong enough. I have some 1/8" bushings and was thinking about trying a bushing.

Long term weather outlook does look good for next Sat - only 20% chance they're showing. Looking forward to seeing your horizontal grinder.

Ken
