Square wheel parts

Does anyone have a good spot to get rubber covered wheels for the square wheel grinder??
I have found a place on line, but the prices seem very high to me..
Also, I have a lathe, and can turn simple stuff, so advice on making my own would be appreciated,
even though I don't think I can make rubber parts.

Thanks
Bill

As a person who started his knifemaking career with a Square Wheel, I can tell you that IF you found parts anywhere online, you are lucky. A few years ago Wilton and Jet merged, and all of a sudden Square Wheel parts became scarce, and expensive.

For contact wheels I would recommend checking out http://www.sunray-inc.com/ The only thing you have to be aware of is that Sunray is mainly a military contractor....which means any order you place must be in complete detail. When dealing with a company that works with military contracts, EVERY detail must be specified....which means you can't take any detail for granted. If you don't specify it, you won't get it. That being said, they are great folks to deal with. Their main business is building urethane wheels for military tanks.

Heres a couple of articles that I have on my website about the square wheel.....it might give you some ideas for making the machine "better" for knifemaking.....

Heres a platen that I designed based on the square wheel: http://www.caffreyknives.net/grinder_platen.html

Thanks Ed. I have one and was wondering why I couldn't find advice on the old girl.
