tips on working ivory

I have aquired some pre-ban ivory. I suspect it is similiar to working bone but I'm looking for advice. Any tips and pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

I have never worked with it,but make sure your belts are good and sharp
because it will burn very easy.Someone else will come along shortly that knows

Pretty much everything applies as was discussed in this thread about working mammoth ivory.

It's basically the same material just with a slightly different grain structure. The main thing to remember is don't get it hot.

It's important to have a documented paper trail of the ivory and to supply a copy to the knife owner. There has been more than one knife confiscated by over zealous DNR agents.
