tread mill motor

I was wondering if any one has used a tread mill motor for your belt sander? I was giving one with a 1.5 hp dc motor and really wanted to use it for the variable speed. I have all the pillow block bearings and was wondering what size diameter pullies to use for instance should I put a 2" pully on the motor and drive shaft.

I have heard that since the motor from the treadmill is not sealed debris from grinding will get inside and the motor will fry. Perhaps not right away but eventually. If may be good enough to bang out a couple blades in order to buy a better motor.

I fried a treadmill motor because of grinding dust. It worked good for a while, maybe three months

Steal a pair of the wife's or SO's nylons and slide one over the open end of the motor. It will filter the air and look sexy too. VAVA VAVOOM !
