Trying to make my first lock back

I got the book How to make knives by Ron Lake ,Wayne Clay and another guy. I want to make the Wayne Clay type. It uses a small bic pen type spring. He uses a bushing in the instructions. I havent ever used a bushing and dont have a way to size it properly. Ive make several liner locks though. Can I not use bushing and use washers ?

You don't have to use a bushing,it does make it easier to pien the pivot pin and have it disappear without locking up the blade.

I gave up on that for now. Details were left out of book. Like thicknesses and dia. of stuff leaving me to guess. I havent up dated my profile I guess. Used to work at BTF in McKinney
