Learning how to forge blades, other than a few basic pointers, is all about pounding the steel. I have a friend who apprenticed at my shop, who after a little instruction went home and forged a hundred blades in three months at the end of this, he could forge blades as well as I.

If there is any way you can get hold of an anvil and source of fire, make some steel knife shapes and learn as you go.
