    coote grinder

I have used one for over 10 years. Yes, I would like a 3 wheel upgrade, but you can make very nice knives with the Coote. I made the attachment shown.

Travis, I live reasonably close in Port Arthur, Tx and would be interested in the 104# Peter Wright. Can I get some photos?

    purchasing new grinder questions

I am looking for some advice. I am close to being ready to upgrade from my Coote grinder. Looking at the KMG and Polar Bear Forge GIB. I am really wanting a smooth running machine with no vibration. Any thoughts about the difference with the drive systems? What about how handy is the rest...

    coote grinder upgrade

i hope to upgrade to a kmg soon, but will keep the Coote. This upgrade is really nice, the larger plate is really nice for profiling.

    coote grinder upgrade

I appreciate my Coote grinder for the value. However, the rest is a real pain, requiring the platen to be removed to install or remove the rest. Here is my cheap solution. 2" tube drilled and tapped and bolted to the side of the machine, set screw in the top and 1/2' plate for the rest. Works...

    chasing scratches

I have been using boss's Norax belts and taking everything to 5 microns. Will the 2000 grit get me a finer finish? Karl, that is a good reminder about sanding everything that is not a scratch. When I forget that I usually end up with a mistake.

    chasing scratches

thanks guys! I am trying to make palm swells on the handles and having trouble nicking the bolster. I need to rethink the process. That one was really aggravating!!!!

    chasing scratches

Building a hunting knife for a friend for Christmas. All done but time to buff, found a scratch in the stainless bolster that I could not stand. Back to grinder and whoops, just ruined the bolster completely. It seems I am having a tough time with the stainless bolsters lately. I am getting...

    Coote grinder users?

Here are a couple of photos of mine. I used a link type belt to reduce the vibration. Also, I like the glass platen. It is a pain to remove the platen in order to take the rest on and off. It helps a little to drill a hole in the rest to be able to use a long allen wrench to access the platen...

    paring knife

By contouring the blade, do you mean to lower the cutting edge or raise the handle? Thanks for the ideas!!!

    paring knife

Constructive criticism would be appreciated. The blade is cpm154, bolsters are stainless and my photography stinks. I do not have leather tools or skills yet, so I made the wooden sheath to protect the blade in the kitchen drawer.

    paring knife

This is my first post. I never considered my work good enough. I posted this primarily to show off the Maple Burl that I purchased from Mike928. It is a little thick in the tang, but she wanted it to be heavier in the hand than my normal. Hope you like it. Thanks Mike! Bryce Eller

    oops cpm154 annealing

I might as well try to the sub-critical anneal. Thanks for the help!!!

    oops cpm154 annealing

I took the temp to 1650, hold for 2 hours, drop at 25 degrees per hour to 600, then let cool in the furnace. Thanks Boss, I won't make this mistake again.

    oops cpm154 annealing

I could use some advice after an obviously poor decision. Bought some CPM 154 from Boss. Cut into big rectangles with a bandsaw. Profiled on the bench grinder. I felt like I may have overheated it in the profiling, so I decided to anneal it. Did not think about needing to use the SS foil...

    carbon steel choice

my 2 cents as I have made most of my knives out of carbon steel. 1095 is a great steel ONLY if heat treated properly and usually by a professional. 1084 is forgiving and makes a tough blade that is not hard to sharpen.
