Ceramic Glass Platen Liner problems

I have a Ceramic Glass Platen Liner on my KMG clone. Where I have bumped it with the work rest when adjusting it has chunks coming out of it. I don't remember having this problem with the one I had on there before. It was able to take the small bumps without chunking out on the edge! I am not sure this one is the same material as the first one as I ordered the second one from a different place!!

This is my work rest I made. I can roatate it to use with the small wheel, my 10" wheel or the belt. The clearance on the belt is about 3/16 on each side so times when I am adjusting it bumps the platen, with bad results to the edge of the liner!!

So I guess what I am asking here is this edge chipping normal?? I just do not remember the first platen I had being that easy to edge chip. I cracked it all the way across one day when I had the rest adjusted way to far back and the belt sucked a piece into the platen slamming it and cracking the glass but I do not remember having chipping on the edge!

Also is there a more durable surface to use on platen as a liner??

Ceramic glass is cheap and effective, nevertheless being glass it's brittle. If you introduce tension when glueing (if you clamp it flexing it upon non perfectly flat platen surface) it will be more prone to chip and shatter of course.
Just replace it and be careful when adjusting the work rest gap next time...in my experience steel won't be so flat for long, the glass will run longer in comparison.

Appreciate the info. I guess what I was fishing for is there a better alternative?? Something a little more durable and perhaps not so easy to chip!

I will have to back and dig thru my invoices but the first glass I had on the platen was not as easily chipped, it got bumped several times and I don't remember a chip. What killed it was like I said letting a piece get sucked into the grinder, slamming against the face of the platen. And then it only cracked it across the glass. I got scared that it was going to come apart while using the grinder and had to order a new glass.

I have heard of some folks using a granite tile cut to fit and was wondering how those held up!!!! As well as I know there are a couple of different types glass that can be used! I can't remember the name of the other type and I don't know how well they hold up!!

someone on here mentioned using granite tile, and that they got it cut to size right there at the big home improvement store. That may be a great choice for you. It ought to be tougher to chip than the pyroceramic glass.

glass chips easy, especially on a sharp edge. Round over the edge at least slightly and it should get a bit better but glass chips when struck on the edge. Round it over by sanding it like metal.
It's possible your new glass is slightly wider than your old glass and the metal part of the platen protected it.
